In 1974, Jim and Carolyn Girten opened what was previously known as Home Center Hardware in Uniontown, KY. The store was the epitome of a family business, with Jim, Carolyn, and son Tony logging long hours to establish themselves in the community.
The grand opening of their new store, Morganfield Home Center in Morganfield, KY, this past June shows that the hard work was well worth it. When the Girtens moved Uniontown Home Center to Morganfield, KY, in 1986 and changed the name to acknowledge its new home, they worked with 3,500 square feet of retail space. Now they are now the proud owners of a brand new 15,000-square-foot store, and they couldn't be happier.
Michelle Baird is Jim and Carolyn's daughter as well as the chief financial officer of Morganfield Home Center. According to Baird, it takes a lot more than just one person to run a successful business.
When the Girtens' store opened, they had two full-time employees and one part-time, including Carolyn and Tony. Today, Morganfield Home Center employs 26 full-time workers and some seasonal part-timers. But the Girtens are also keeping the business in the family. They have four grandsons on staff:
Baird applauds the Do it Best Corp. Store Design department for its guidance throughout the new store project. The Store Design staff coordinated efforts with Morganfield veteran staffer and lead estimator, Bobby Hunt, to get the job done right. Baird says the help from Do it Best Corp. and all of their dedicated employees made the transition smooth.
“It’s really nice to be in the new building,” Baird says. “We’re adding 10 to 15 items a week. Now it’s much easier to stock new items as opposed to worrying about where to put them.
